Summer Reading Program "Dig into Reading"

Hello Everyone!

The Summer Reading Program at the Reed City Public Library (RCPL) is a fun way for students of all ages to continue developing their reading skills throughout the summer and participate in programs that are both fun and educational. The 2013 Summer Reading Program themes are “Dig into Reading!” (Pre-K – 5th graders) and “Beneath the Surface!”(Teens).

The Summer Reading program begins with a Summer Reading Program Kickoff Event held Saturday, June 22nd from 11:00 a.m-1:00 p.m., at Westerburg Park in Reed City.  Children can register for the Summer Reading Program at this event as well as enjoy games, snacks and an exciting presentation by “Wings of Wonder.” Wings of Wonder is a non-profit organization designed to foster appreciation, understanding, honor and respect for raptors and the important role these birds play in healthy ecosystems. A display of raptor artifacts including wings, talons, feathers, pellets and photos will be available in addition to LIVE birds! (NO PETS PLEASE)

Program days for the Summer Reading Program (SRP) will occur on Tuesdays.   Our first day will be Tuesday, June 25th at Rambadt Park in Reed City, featuring Whispering Pines Mobile Zoo’s “Digging Animalsat 1 p.m. suitable for both age groups. Consecutive Tuesday programs will be scheduled as follows: Preschool - 1st graders at 11 a.m. and 2nd graders - 5th graders at 1 p.m.  Please watch for themed programs where children will learn, do a craft or activity and socialize in a fun environment with other children, volunteers, and library staff. Watch for special Teen, Adult & Family events too!

As in previous years, we are again offering “Take Home Craft Kits” for any child that is interested. Kits are free and will be located near the front desk. Watch for new crafts weekly!

Children participating in SRP will earn prizes for reading!  For every 15 minutes of reading completed (or being read to), Preschool - 1st graders can earn their choice of a prize from the prize box or a gift certificate, while 2nd - 5th graders will receive the same for every 30 minutes of reading completed.  A maximum of 3 prizes (2 of which can be gift certificates) can be earned per child per week. For every hour of reading completed, Teens may earn up to 3 certificates per week. Children will be required to bring in their reading logs weekly to have a staff member record their progress. Prizes will not be awarded for previous weeks, so get your logs in as soon as possible!  Parents are encouraged to help young children with their reading and reading logs.  Gift certificates include free ice cream cones, pizzas, baked goods and more thanks to the generosity of local businesses.  Look for many cool new prizes in RCPL’s prize box as well! Each small prize earned equals one entry into the Grand Prize Drawing at the end of the program!

Receive one entry into the Grand Prize Drawing just for registering!

The Grand Prize Drawing will be held at the Final Ceremony Program on Tuesday, August 6th, in the RCPL Community Room.  To increase chances of winning, children will be awarded one additional entry for each weekly prize earned. More reading equals more chances to win! Children must be present to win the “top” two grand prizes for each reading group. Each child can win a maximum of two smaller grand prizes and one “top” grand prize.

In a joint effort with Spectrum Health-Reed City, RCPL will also host “Read to the Dogs” as part of the Summer Reading Program every Thursday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Any child wishing to read to trained service dogs will have the opportunity to do so in RCPL’s community room.  The dogs will have handlers available and all dogs have been specially trained to interact with all ages.   This is a great way for your child to read to a non-critical audience and have a fun reading experience with the dogs!

Please join the Reed City Public Library for a summer of reading, learning and fun!
