Great Michigan Read Trip to former State Hospital (Traverse City)
The Reed City Area Public Library was able to facilitate a bus tour up to the former State Hospital in Traverse City as a local event partner for the 2014 Great Michigan Read events!

The 2014 Great Michigan Read selection is Annie's Ghosts by Steve Luxenberg.  This book explores the history of mental health in Michigan and offered local communities the opportunity to plan a number of related events exploring mental health issues.

A group of twenty-three individuals were able to tour the former State hospital on Friday, April 11, 2014  on an "Intensive Tour" at a cost of
$ 22 per person.  The tour included exploration of various buildings in various states of rehabilitation, tunnels connecting the buildings and touring the grounds and businesses in the Grand Traverse Commons.  The Minervini Group, which has developed the site into commercial properties and brought many businesses in, has worked to keep the history of the structures alive and many of the architectural details that makes the property so unique.   This tour was awe-inspiring and a truly unique educational opportunity made possible by transportation sponsored by the Ferris State University Center for Teaching and Learning.

Please inquire at the Library or Artworks of Big Rapids for details about a "Hop On Tour" planned for April 25, 2014.  Either location can accommodate registrations.  There are plenty of seats available and the trip is a cost of $2!
