The Director's Desk

Welcome to the Reed City Area District Library!

My name is Heather Symon Bassett and I am the Director of the Reed City Area District Library.  I would love to invite anyone in to learn about about the Library's services and meet our friendly staff!

I think you will find the Library to be a welcoming environment for all, whether you are using the public computers, searching for your favorite fiction or non-fiction works, using the WiFi, checking out a video or meeting any other leisure or informational need.

I have been employed at the Reed City Area District Library for over eight years.  I have loved the work at every level, having started as a clerk, then serving as Assistant Director, and now in my present role as Director.  I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree from Central Michigan University with majors in psychology and sociology.  My early employment experience was in human services and I still love being able to help people meet a need.  I earned my Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2009. In addition to my library experience at the Reed City Area District Library, I have experience as a reference librarian in both an academic and public library.  I can honestly say I love being a librarian!  Things that I particularly enjoy about my role at the Library is the great diversity in tasks, seeing projects come to fruition and interacting with patrons.  We have truly wonderful patrons that come in and that is the real hook for me!

We have a lot of great things about our Library, which you will have to come in and see for yourself, but I thought I would share a few fun things about the Library.

-If the Library has a collection renown, it is the cookbook section!  You will be hard-pressed to find another Library of similar size with a cookbook collection as extensive as the one at the Reed City Area District Library!

-We are currently attempting to raise funds for a the New Library Project.  The Library is currently located in the lower level of the County Annex Building and the future site of the Library is the building located at 829 S. Chestnut, which has a great history in having been the St. Philip's Catholic School and later the Reed City Area Public School Administration Building.

-There is one full time employee (myself) and three part-time employees at the Library.

-The Library is a robust library in terms of programming, offering an average of eight (8) programs per month! This includes weekly story hours, book clubs, a teen advisory board and much more!

-The Library offers many FREE services including WiFi, video checkouts, public computers and more!

-Visit the Library to ask us about our MeLCat service which allows access to millions of items from hundreds of Michigan Libraries!

Those are just a few facts about the Library.  You will have to stop in to learn more and experience the Library yourself!

We look forward to seeing you!

Best Regards,
