2014 Summer Reading Program Kicks Off Saturday, June 21st with Camel Rides. Read to the Dogs is back!

The Summer Reading Program at the Reed City Area District Library (RCADL) is a fun way for students of all ages to continue developing their reading skills throughout the summer and participate in programs that are both fun and educational. The 2014 Summer Reading Program science themes are “Fizz, Boom, Read!” (Pre-K – 6th graders) and “Spark a Reaction!”(Teens).

The Summer Reading program begins with a Summer Reading Program Kickoff Event held Saturday, June 21st from 11:00 a.m-1:00 p.m., at Rambadt Park in Reed City.  Children can register for the Summer Reading Program at this event as well as enjoy games, snacks and camel rides, provided by Whispering Pines Mobile Zoo! (There is a 100lb weight limit, so children must be able to ride without a parent)

Program days for the Summer Reading Program (SRP) will occur on Tuesdays.   Our first day will be Tuesday, June 24th. Consecutive Tuesday programs will be scheduled as follows: Preschool-1st graders at 11 a.m. and 2nd graders - 6th graders at 1 p.m.  Please watch for themed programs where children will learn, do a craft or activity and socialize in a fun environment with other children, volunteers and Library staff. Watch for special Teen, Adult & Family events too!

As in previous years, we are again offering “Take Home Craft Kits” for any child that is interested. Kits are free and will be located near the front desk. Watch for new crafts weekly!

Children participating in SRP will earn prizes for reading!  For every 15 minutes of reading completed (or being read to), Preschool - 1st graders can earn their choice of a prize from the prize box or a gift certificate, while 2nd - 6th graders will receive the same for every 30 minutes of reading completed.  A maximum of 3 prizes (2 of which can be gift certificates) can be earned per child per week. For every hour of reading completed, Teens may earn up to 3 certificates per week. Children will be required to bring in their reading logs weekly to have a staff member record their progress. Prizes will not be awarded for previous weeks, so get your logs in as soon as possible!  Parents are encouraged to help young children with their reading and reading logs.  Gift certificates include free ice cream cones, pizzas, baked goods and more thanks to the generosity of local businesses.  Look for many cool new prizes in RCADL’s prize box as well! Each small prize earned equals one entry into the Grand Prize Drawing at the end of the program!

Receive one entry into the Grand Prize Drawing just for registering!

The Grand Prize Drawing will be held at the Final Ceremony Program on Tuesday, August 5th, in the RCADL Community Room.  To increase chances of winning, children will be awarded one additional entry for each weekly prize earned. More reading equals more chances to win! Children must be present to win the “top” grand prizes for each reading group. Each child can win a maximum of two smaller grand prizes and a grand prize.

In a joint effort with Spectrum Health-Reed City, RCADL will also host “Read to the Dogs” as part of the Summer Reading Program on Thursday, June 26th and Thursday, July 17th from 11:30-12:30. Any child wishing to read to trained service dogs will have the opportunity to do so in RCADL’s Community Room.  The dogs will have handlers available and all dogs have been specially trained to interact with all ages. This is a great way for your child to read to a non-critical audience and have a fun reading experience with the dogs!

Please join the Reed City Area District Library for a summer of reading, learning and fun!
